Home sweet home

Rants

Couldn't see it coming huh!? I moved my blog yet again! This is the bajillionth time I pulled this one. I am pretty sure this is truly, really, sincerely the last time I did this. Why? Read on ...

Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.

This quote takes a whole new meaning when you consider my journey on blogging. I've tried a ton of different platforms and CMS:

  • Blogger
  • WordPress
  • write.as
  • Bloggi
  • 1MB
  • Weebly
  • Ghost
  • Grav
  • Jekyll

The list goes on, but you get the idea. Every one of these platforms have their pros and cons, and I wasn't happy with any of them. (Otherwise I wouldn't be here, right?)

My last blog was hosted on Jekyll via Github Pages. It's simple, I write my posts in markdown and just submit them to the repository, and my site would be automatically generated. There is one caveat though - I needed to write my post in plain text. WYSISYG is what I am used to, and feel most comfortable to work with. I want to preview exactly how my post would look like when I'm writing.

The others are mainly because they are either too heavy (Ghost, WordPress, Weebly, Grav) or too pricey for a personal blog that isn't constantly updated (1MB, Bloggi). write.as is great, but I don't like its themes, I like minimalist, functional looking websites. Blogger is very dated, their themes aren't great and the editor is mediocre, plus it's Google, I don't like the idea of my readers getting tracked.

Last week Scribbles caught my attention when I was scrolling on Reddit for recommendations, I quickly spun up a new account to test it and unironically discovered this might just be what I really needed all along - an online publishing platform that's both feature rich and minimalistic. The frequent update Scribbles get is also a plus, nobody loves abandonware. But the biggest part is I can reach the man behind this awesome platform with an e-mail, how convenient.

I am still testing the capabilities of Scribbles, so I am no paying customer yet. However, the $199 for life deal is very enticing, considering that it equals to 4 years of subscription. I may pay for monthly subscription first to see how will my suggestions be implemented before committing to a lifetime membership.
