Got a new server at home
RantsI have been in search of reliable, fast cloud storage providers for quite some time. At the time of writing, I have been using Koofr for a few years now. I have no complain about Koofr's stability or privacy. But since it's based in EU, connection to it from Hong Kong is painfully slow. Ideally, a Nextcloud provider will solve multiple issues at once: Caldav syncing, file syncing, task syncing. The best I found was Hetzner, $5/mo for 1TB of storage. It's kind of cheap, but costs a lot in the long run. I settled for Disroot for some time to sync my calendar and tasks. Since I got some money at hand, I decided buying a home server is the sensible choice to save some money.
I bought mine on Pinduoduo (China Temu), price is RMB 689 (~$100). The brand name is Limyee. Specs:
- Intel N150
- 8GB Ram
- 128GB SSD
- 1Gbps Ethernet
- Built-in WiFi
There are a lot of products in this price range that offers either N100 or N150. Choose yours wisely. I chose mine because of the price (a lot of the contenders in this price range offers on barebone without ssd and ram). I have a 1TB SSD lying around I bought a year ago, so the first thing I did was to exchange the 128GB SSD with the 1TB SSD I have.

It came preinstalled with Windows 11. I had no use for it, so I installed Yunohost on it quickly. Installing Yunohost was mostly smooth, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to use my domain with ddns. I decided to use the DDNS Yunohost offers.
I am looking to install more apps other than Nextcloud on it. But I haven't decided yet.
